The Main Causes of Die Casting Mold Cracking

Die casting mold manufacturing is a type of liquid metal forging in the casting industry, which is a process completed on specialized die casting and forging machines. Its manufacturing process flow is as follows: the molten metal is first poured into the mold cavity at a low or high speed for filling; the mold is equipped with movable cavity surfaces, which perform pressure forging as the molten metal cools. This process not only eliminates shrinkage cavities and porosity defects of the blank but also refines the internal structure of the blank into forged broken grains.

Die casting molds are prone to cracking during the manufacturing process. What are the specific causes of mold cracking?

The main causes of die casting mold cracking are as follows:

  1. The temperature of aluminum material is too high during the die casting production process.

  2. The spraying of mold release agent is unreasonable during the die casting production process.

  3. The mold heat treatment is unsatisfactory, especially in terms of hardness—the hardness should be no less than HRC 47.

  4. The quality of mold steel is poor; it is recommended to use 8407, refined H13, or higher-grade materials.

  5. The design of the mold's cooling system or the operation of cooling channels is improper.

Early-stage cracking is generally caused by excessively high initial forging temperature of the blank. Overheating is an irreparable defect, so the initial forging temperature during the blank manufacturing process must be strictly controlled. The same applies to the quenching process, and the heating time should be strictly controlled to prevent decarburization.

After selecting high-quality materials, the focus lies on heat treatment. Stress relief treatment should be performed after a certain number of production cycles. In addition, the structural design of the die casting mold should be reasonable to avoid stress concentration as much as possible, with special attention to controlling the size of fillet radii. By following these measures, the probability of cracking in the manufactured die casting molds will be significantly reduced.
